Have you ever thought about music? I mean like really thought about it? I know it’s something we all hear on a daily basis, but a lot of the time it’s background music or there for a lighthearted sing along. I don’t believe it’s often that we deeply think about it. Or at least I know I don’t always deeply think about it, but on occasion it happens. One of those occasions was the other day, and I was truly hit with how powerful it can really be. It can do so much and impact people in so many different ways. I’m not sure that it’s possible to list everything it can do for people because what it does for me may be different than what it does for others.
Music can make you laugh, cry, laugh until you cry, make you angry, or feel any other emotion. It can make you feel nostalgic, and take you back to a time from your past. I’m not sure about you, but it can even sometimes make me long for a time period I wasn’t even around for. It can connect you to people, places, things, events, and basically everything else. Sometimes it allows you a new understanding of something or someone, and this is only a small portion of what it can do.
You can find yourself relating to a song, and your reason for relating can be completely different than the mindset the writer had when writing it. Two people could hear the same song and relate to it in completely different ways. This thought often hits me when I go to a concert, and see a large crowd passionately singing along to a song. I watch and realize those people may love and relate to the song as much as I do because of events in their own life. Music can be a friend or help you to get you through things. Also you can relate to a song for a while, and then later stop relating to it. Other times you may relate to a song for one event, and then later relate to it because of something else.
Music can also be a teacher at times as well. I’ve gotten some of the best advice, and learned some of the greatest lessons from music. I can listen to a song multiple times, and be taught something different each time. It also can inspire you to learn something new, to try something different, and so much more.
I feel I’ve mostly talked about lyrics, but the actual music does as much if not more. Don’t believe me? Go look on YouTube for scary movies put to Wii music or funny movies filled with suspenseful music. Overall the instruments play just as large as a role as the lyrics. I’ve heard songs on CD that sound sad, but then heard them live and they sound angry because of the instruments used or the musical changes put to the live version. Or a happy song turn into something sad etc. Or I think of songs by artists like Twenty One Pilots for instance. A lot of their music sounds upbeat and happy while the lyrics lean more on the sad side. You don’t feel sad though because of the instrumentals used.
There is music for basically every emotion, event, time period, place, and basically everything else. It can pump you up and make you want to have a dance party or help you chill out. It helps you think, but also lets you escape your thoughts. It’s so simple and complex at the same time. This is just a short explanation of what it can do, and it blows my mind. How have you seen music work in your life? Is there something else that comes to mind that it can do? I’d love to hear your thoughts on music so feel free to comment below!
