A Day Alone in St. Augustine

Downtown St. Augustine

“I also believe that introversion is my greatest strength. I have such a strong inner life that I’m never bored and only occasionally lonely. No matter what mayhem is happening around me, I know I can always turn inward”

Susan Cain

Hello everyone! I hope you are all doing well. It’s Friday, my school semester is almost over, and I’m going to see the new Avengers tonight so I can’t complain. I also just recently got back from a weekend trip to St. Augustine, which was so great. It really allowed me a chance to get a breather, and mentally prepare myself to end the semester.

My family and I left last Thursday to head to St. Augustine to go to my sisters college orientation, which was really exciting! We arrived late Thursday, and her orientation was all day Friday. Which meant that I got an entire day to myself as both my sister and my parents were in meetings all day long.

Some of you may already know this, but for those who don’t know. I am an introvert. Which means days to myself are some of my favorite kind of days. I had been planning my alone day for a while. When I say plan I really mean I just did my research on what food places I needed to eat at throughout the day. I was so excited to get to explore the city all by myself, and it was great knowing my day could go however I wanted it to.

After having breakfast at the hotel Friday morning, I got my backpack all packed for the day to prepare for heading out. I packed my personal journal, my blog journal, a book, sunscreen, my umbrella, a water bottle, and also anything I needed from my purse. Then we headed downtown where I parted ways with my family.

The first order of business after going off on my own was to find coffee. Let’s be real, the tiny coffee cups that hotels put out at breakfast just aren’t enough to help get a day started. When doing my research before going I found that St. Augustine had a decent selection of coffee shops to choose from. I decided to go with The Kookaburra. The day had already started to get a bit warm so I chose to go with an iced coffee. I picked their drink called Honey Badger, which I believe is cinnamon, honey, and vanilla. It was so good!! In fact, it was so good that I went back the next day to get another one. I liked The Kookaburra because it was cute, the drink was really good, and the staff was friendly. They also have hay straws, which is pretty awesome!! So the next time you’re in St. Augustine you should give it a try.

After grabbing my coffee I spent time just leisurely walking around the city. I took in the sights, people watched, and kept an eye out for the food places I knew I wanted to try. It wasn’t a super busy day so it was really nice just to be able to walk around, drink my coffee, and take in the history of the city. I also ran across the place I wanted to get Dole Whip at, and quickly got my hands on some. I eventually found a bench right across from the church that is pictured above. I pulled my journal out and spent some time journaling and thinking. It was so peaceful just to be able to take that time, and really enjoy the moment.

Not long after that my “plans” were slightly dampened…literally!! A storm came moving in, which led me to visiting the Lightner Museum. I had wanted to go for a while so I was kind of excited. Overall, it was kind of cool, but wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. There were parts of it that I really liked, but it’s not a place I’d likely visit again. I think my favorite part was the music presentation they put on, and the Edgar Degas Exhibition that is currently on display. Once the rain slowed down I decided to head back out to the city area, and it was perfect. You know why??? Because everyone had gone to hide from the rain, which meant the city was pretty empty. An introverts dream!!

After walking around again for a bit I decided it was time for more food. I went in search of waffles from Cousteau’s Waffle and Milkshake Bar! That search led me to having the most amazing waffle!! I chose the Hennessey, which is basically a smore’s waffle. It’s covered in chocolate sauce, marshmallow fluff, and graham cracker crumbs. It was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted! I definitely want to go back next time I’m there to try their other waffle options. I also need to make sure I’m hungrier because I want to try one of their milkshakes as well. It’s a good thing there is a lot of walking to be done in St. Augustine…

Not long after finishing my waffle I decided I needed to walk some of those calories off, and so I walked over to Castillo de San Marcos. That’s the fort in St. Augustine, which is the oldest and largest masonry fort in the continental United States (thanks for the info Google). I’ve been inside a time or two, but I’d never just walked around the outside of the fort. The lap around it was totally worth it as it provided for some beautiful views. {I also found a good spot to sneak in a self timer pic 😉 }

The time for a day to myself soon came to an end as I walked back to the campus to meet up with my family. I did get a few extra minutes to myself while on the campus though, and I put them to good use. I found a good reading spot, and got a chance to read a bit. It was such a lovely moment as there was a slight breeze, and the scenery surrounding me was just so beautiful. That’s where my family found me! Soaking up the last seconds of the day to myself with a book in hand.

I had the best time exploring the city by myself. It was such a refreshing way to recharge my introvert battery. I already hope to be able to do it again one day in St. Augustine, but also in other cities. I feel like I have a brand new appreciation for exploring unfamiliar places. Don’t get me wrong, doing stuff with friends and family is great as well. It’s just there’s something about exploring alone. I can’t quite explain it, but I can recommend it.

Another great part about it all in the end is that I got to share some of the things I found with my family the next day. I got my recharge day, and then I also got to spend time with family. I couldn’t ask for a better trip! If you’re looking for a place to visit then you should definitely consider St. Augustine. It’s filled with history and so much beauty. The food is also pretty great. It’s also right down the street from the beach, which is something else we checked out. It was a super windy day, but the beach was beautiful. I wanted to share the trip to suggest some great places that I found. I also wanted to share so that I could do my best to show that just because you are by yourself does not mean you can’t have fun. You can be alone and not be bored or lonely. It’s just about making the best of things, and doing things that make you happy. Also when you’re by yourself you don’t have to share your food!!

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed, and if you have any questions or comments feel free to comment below! Have a great weekend!!
